A Brief History

While trying to enter the American arcade market Nintendo decided to create a game based on the cartoon character called Popeye. Due to lisencing problems the characters of Popeye were cut but the game remained. Shigeru Miyamoto came up with the designs of the new characters and the way the game would play. The game consisted of 4 repeating levels in which the hero (Mario) would try to rescue the Lady captured by the giant Gorilla. Mario could jump to avoid enemies and dodge barrels all while climbing the tower to reach the lady.Donkey Kong was named after King Kong but because Miyamoto decided the Gorilla would not be very smart but very stubborn he became Donkey Kong. The lady in need of rescue was named Pauline after the wife of the manager of the warehouse in which Nintendo of America set up shop. Mario would get his name from the warehouse's owner. The Donkey Kong arcade machines were first put into bars in 1981, The Donkey Kong Game became an instant hit earning 200+ dollars a week.Mario would go on to star in a countless variety of games on various game systems becoming the face of Nintendo.Donkey Kong would also go on to become one of Nintendo's most recognizable mascots even getting several games to call his own.
